{"id":1297,"date":"2016-09-10T00:24:48","date_gmt":"2016-09-10T00:24:48","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/dev.jsis.washington.edu\/seac\/?page_id=1297"},"modified":"2016-09-10T00:24:48","modified_gmt":"2016-09-10T00:24:48","slug":"teacher-training-highline-school-district-finding-home","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/jsis.washington.edu\/csead\/resources\/educators\/teacher-training-highline-school-district-finding-home\/","title":{"rendered":"Teacher Training (Highline School District): Finding Home"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><b><i>South and Southeast Asians Find Home: Pairing Informational and Fiction Texts<\/i><\/b><b><\/b><\/p>\n<p>This two evening workshop will explore how the cultural context (setting) contributes to or mirrors the conflicts in the text and inquire how the context shapes or reflects the main character. \u00a0\u00a0Teachers will choose from a variety of countries, texts and genres that address this important topic.\u00a0 UW Jackson School will send participants background information before the first class so that teachers can become more familiar with the regions this workshop features.<\/p>\n<p>The first evening will present an overview of the political, social, economic or religious conditions that would cause a person to make the difficult decision to leave home or to re-define home. Teachers will then explore the following guiding questions:<\/p>\n<p>\u00b7\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 What is home?<\/p>\n<p>\u00b7\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 How do critical incidents reveal character?<\/p>\n<p>\u00b7\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 What common themes unify the motivations to re-define home?<\/p>\n<p>\u00b7\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 What methods do authors use to tell powerful stories about people\u2019s experience?<\/p>\n<p>o\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Critical incidents reveal a character\u2019s dynamic nature.<\/p>\n<p>o\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Characters change over time in response to challenges.<\/p>\n<p>o\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The genre the author selects is important.\u00a0 The text structure should convey meaning and fully engage the reader.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Facilitated by Mary Roberts, the UW Centers for Global Studies, South Asia, and Southeast Asia will convene the class for the first introductory session to provide needed background information and small group sharing, followed by a few weeks during which participants will work on their individual projects. Then, the group will reconvene for an evening meeting.
