{"id":1139,"date":"2018-11-13T18:13:46","date_gmt":"2018-11-13T18:13:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/jsis.washington.edu\/china\/?p=1139"},"modified":"2018-11-13T18:14:31","modified_gmt":"2018-11-13T18:14:31","slug":"in-memoriam-margaret-jeanette-dull","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/jsis.washington.edu\/china\/news\/in-memoriam-margaret-jeanette-dull\/","title":{"rendered":"In Memoriam: Margaret Jeanette Dull"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>We are sad to report that Margaret Jeannette Dull, longtime friend of the Jackson School and wife of Professor Jack Dull, passed away on June 4 this year at the age of 88. She is survived by her son Grant, her daughters Lynessa and Charissa, her sister Susan, six grandchildren, and one great-grandchild.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to Professor Dull\u2019s work as an academic and his role as the director of the East Asia National Resource Center at the University of Washington, Jack and Margaret Dull have been generous contributors to the University of Washington community, serving as hosts, benefactors, and mentors throughout the years.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeg and Jack were gracious hosts, welcoming members of the Program and Chinese scholars to their home in Wedgwood,\u201d remembers Professor Kent Guy. \u201cThey also gave their name to the\u00a0Dull\u00a0scholarship fund, a fund to provide graduate students with funding when needed for emergencies.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Professor Stevan Harrell also remembers the Dulls as warm and gracious mentors and hosts, and specifically recalled one notable story from Deng Xiaoping\u2019s 1979 trip to Seattle. \u201cIn 1979, when Deng Xiaoping came to Seattle, his press corps stayed an extra day after himself had gone on elsewhere. Jack and Peg invited the 6 or 7 reporters and editors, along with some China studies faculty, to dinner at their house, and I remember that the highlight of the reporters\u2019 evening was a Jack-led tour of the premises, the only American house any of them had been in.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Dulls\u2019 legacy will live on in their many contributions to the China Studies Program, the Jackson School, and the History Department, as well as in the endowment they established and in the warm remembrances of their younger colleagues.
