{"id":1110,"date":"2017-12-19T20:52:18","date_gmt":"2017-12-19T20:52:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/jsis.washington.edu\/china\/?p=1110"},"modified":"2018-01-18T15:33:06","modified_gmt":"2018-01-18T15:33:06","slug":"made-translation-collaborative-ethnography-italian-chinese-global-fashion","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/jsis.washington.edu\/china\/news\/made-translation-collaborative-ethnography-italian-chinese-global-fashion\/","title":{"rendered":"Made in Translation:\u00a0A Collaborative Ethnography\u00a0of Italian-Chinese Global Fashion"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"m_-5916475701460838570gmail-p1\" style=\"text-align: center\"><b>Made in Translation:<span class=\"m_-5916475701460838570gmail-Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/b><b>A Collaborative Ethnography<span class=\"m_-5916475701460838570gmail-Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/b><b>of Italian-Chinese Global Fashion<\/b><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"m_-5916475701460838570gmail-p1\" style=\"text-align: center\"><span class=\"aBn\"><span class=\"aQJ\">January 18th, 3:30pm,\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Thomson Hall 317<span class=\"m_-5916475701460838570gmail-Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"m_-5916475701460838570gmail-p1\">This talk is from the first part of our forthcoming book, Made in Translation: A Collaborative Ethnography of Italian-Chinese Global Fashion.<span class=\"m_-5916475701460838570gmail-Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>In this first part, we analyze the negotiations among Italian managers and Chinese entrepreneurs over the value of their contributions to the Chinese production of Italian fashion and the changing asymmetries in their relationships that shape these negotiations.<span class=\"m_-5916475701460838570gmail-Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>Critical to the outcome of these dynamic entanglements of transnational capitalism are the cultural processes through which Italians and Chinese actively construct their actions, dispositions, identities and labor power.<span class=\"m_-5916475701460838570gmail-Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>We show how labor power and value are forged through the encounter between Chinese and Italians rather than brought to it already formed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"m_-5916475701460838570gmail-p3\"><b>Professor Lisa Rofel\u00a0<\/b>has been publishing books and articles on China for the last 30 years.
