{"id":9850,"date":"2020-06-04T05:03:16","date_gmt":"2020-06-04T05:03:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/jsis.washington.edu\/canada\/?p=9850"},"modified":"2020-09-24T20:22:44","modified_gmt":"2020-09-24T20:22:44","slug":"featured-fall-course-indigenous-diplomacies-and-international-relations-in-the-arctic","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/jsis.washington.edu\/canada\/news\/featured-fall-course-indigenous-diplomacies-and-international-relations-in-the-arctic\/","title":{"rendered":"Featured fall course: Indigenous Diplomacies and International Relations in the Arctic"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Our featured course for fall quarter 2020 is<strong>\u00a0<\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/sdb.admin.uw.edu\/timeschd\/uwnetid\/sln.asp?QTRYR=AUT+2020&amp;SLN=10495\"><strong>ARCTIC 200: Indigenous Diplomacies and International Relations in the Arctic<\/strong><\/a>, offered <strong>Tuesdays from 2:30-5:20pm<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Taught by <a href=\"https:\/\/jsis.washington.edu\/canada\/people\/jason-young\/\">Jason Young<\/a> (a former Foreign Language and Area Studies Fellow in Inuktitut through the Canadian Studies Center), this course introduces students to international relations in the Arctic, with an emphasis on understanding them from the perspective of the region\u2019s Indigenous peoples.<\/p>\n<p>In this course, students will:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Study dramatic environmental, economic, and social transformations in the Arctic<\/li>\n<li>Learn about emerging geopolitical issues<\/li>\n<li>Explore indigenous perspectives on international relations in the Arctic<\/li>\n<li>Challenge themselves to understand international frameworks through the lens of Indigenous knowledge systems<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Instructor\u00a0Jason\u00a0Young\u00a0studies the political implications of the use of digital technologies by Inuit, Canadian citizens, scientists, and policymakers to discuss and implement environmental management strategies in response to climate change in the Arctic.
