In mid-November Center director, Rich Watts and Ph.D. candidate, Max Showalter, presented at the 25th<\/sup> Biennial Conference of the Association for Canadian Studies in the United States in Montr\u00e9al.<\/p>\n

Rich Watts, faculty director of the Canadian Studies Center, Henry M. Jackson School of International Studies, and associate professor in the Department of French and Italian Studies, participated in a panel discussing the future challenges for Canadian studies programs. He highlighted the shared program between the University of Washington and Western Washington University, as well as the Qu\u00e9bec French language program run in collaboration with UW in the High School, the new agreement with l\u2019Universit\u00e9 Laval to enable UW students to study in Qu\u00e9bec, the Arctic studies initiative, and the many collaborations the Center has with units across the UW, regionally and nationally.<\/p>\n

Max Showalter, PhD candidate in the School of Oceanography, presented ongoing work as part of the panel called \u201cUnique Voices in Inuit Policy Development.\u201d His research analyzes how Inuit communities frame their relationship with the environment and pursue policy goals within the western security framework. The research includes elements of Inuktitut that Showalter is studying at the UW.<\/p>\n

Also present at the conference were former UW Canada Fulbright Visiting Chairs in Arctic Studies Andrew Chater (2018\u201319), Brescia University, and Heather Nicols (2015\u201316), Trent University.<\/p>\n
