{"id":2376,"date":"2017-09-13T21:24:08","date_gmt":"2017-09-13T21:24:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/jsis.washington.edu\/canada\/?p=2376"},"modified":"2018-11-27T21:46:21","modified_gmt":"2018-11-27T21:46:21","slug":"canadian-social-work-practices-faculty-research-presented-international-audience","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/jsis.washington.edu\/canada\/news\/canadian-social-work-practices-faculty-research-presented-international-audience\/","title":{"rendered":"Canadian Social Work Practices: Faculty Research Presented to an International Audience"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Stan DeMello and Morna McEachern represented the University of Washington, Canadian Studies Center and the Pacific Northwest Canadian Studies Consortium and presented three papers: \u201cIn Search of Spirit: Celebration of Native Elders as Warrior Scholars across the 49<sup>th<\/sup> Parallel,\u201d \u201cTruer to Northern Pregnant Teens: Stories toward Culturally Safe Childbearing Practices in Inuit Nunangat,\u201d and \u201cColumbia River Treaty Renewal: Report from a Field Course.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The conference was a truly life- and scholarship- affirming meeting of Indigenous people and allies from six continents. S\u00e1mi social work faculty from UiT Alta hosted the meeting under the light of the midnight sun. True to the S\u00e1mi principles of usefulness, beauty, and ethics, the program was organized to engender \u201ca society where indigenous and non-indigenous people live side-by-side, where culture and tradition can be kept vivid and respected and where development can take place both in modern businesses and traditional culture and lifestyle\u201d (Anne Husebekk, Rector, UiT, Alta).<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_2472\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\" style=\"width: 300px\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2472 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/jsis.washington.edu\/canada\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2017\/09\/3-2017-Alta-conference-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"#3 2017 Alta conference\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/jsis.washington.edu\/canada\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2017\/09\/3-2017-Alta-conference-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/jsis.washington.edu\/canada\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2017\/09\/3-2017-Alta-conference-375x281.jpg 375w, https:\/\/jsis.washington.edu\/canada\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2017\/09\/3-2017-Alta-conference-108x81.jpg 108w, https:\/\/jsis.washington.edu\/canada\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2017\/09\/3-2017-Alta-conference.jpg 640w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Stan DeMello (far right) and Morna McEachern (to his left) with participants at the 4th International Indigenous Social Work Conference.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>This international exchange of Indigenous ideas and approaches to environmental, social, economic, artistic, and political questions deepened and broadened the participants\u2019 connections and understanding of Canada\u2019s place in indigeneity.
