Monte Mills joined the UW faculty in 2022 as Charles I. Stone Professor of Law and the Director of the Native American Law Center. He teaches American Indian Law, Property, and other classes focused on Native American and natural resources related topics. This fall, he joined the Center as an affiliate faculty member.<\/span><\/p>\n

Monte’s research and writing focuses on the intersection of Federal Indian Law, Tribal sovereignty, and natural resources as well as race and racism in the law and legal education. He has published several law review articles and serves as a co-author on two textbooks: <\/span>American Indian Law, Cases and Commentary<\/span><\/i>(along with Robert T. Anderson, Sarah A. Krakoff, and Kevin K. Washburn) and <\/span>Native American Natural Resources Law<\/span><\/i> (with Michael Blumm and Elizabeth Kronk Warner). Monte also co-authored <\/span>A Third Way: Decolonizing the Laws of Indigenous Cultural Protection<\/span><\/i>, which was published by Cambridge University Press in July 2020.<\/span><\/p>\n

In spring quarter 2024, Monte and Fabbi served as co-faculty leads for the UW Distinguished Humphrey Fellowship Program on Indigenous Leadership. Monte\u2019s teaching and research include cross-border issues including law and policy, water rights, combating climate change, and co-management of public lands.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
