{"id":10950,"date":"2021-09-29T02:59:29","date_gmt":"2021-09-29T02:59:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/jsis.washington.edu\/canada\/?p=10950"},"modified":"2021-09-30T23:10:27","modified_gmt":"2021-09-30T23:10:27","slug":"new-affiliate-faculty-yoshitaka-ota","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/jsis.washington.edu\/canada\/news\/new-affiliate-faculty-yoshitaka-ota\/","title":{"rendered":"Welcome new affiliate faculty &#8212; Yoshitaka Ota"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/jsis.washington.edu\/canada\/people\/yoshitaka-ota\/\">Yoshitaka Ota<\/a>\u00a0served as director of the Nereus Program, a global interdisciplinary initiative between the Nippon Foundation and the University of British Columbia to further knowledge about how to best attain sustainability for the world\u2019s oceans, between 2011 and 2019. During that time, he identified a capacity and knowledge gap in addressing the widening inequality in ocean use (extraction as well as conservation).\u00a0At the University of Washington, he established a new research center, Ocean Nexus, housed in the EarthLab to fill this gap by promoting social equity and justice in global ocean governance.\u00a0He also\u00a0serves as a research assistant professor\u00a0at the School of Marine and Environmental Affairs. Yoshi\u2019s\u00a0primary research looks at ocean governance and policy, focusing on equity and justice. He has conducted research on the impacts of climate change on First Nations communities in British Columbia.
