Apply now for a Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) Fellowship!

Applications due January 31, 2021

FLAS Fellowships support undergraduate, graduate and professional students in acquiring modern foreign languages and an enhanced knowledge about Canada. Students from all programs and departments are encouraged to apply. FLAS Fellowships are available to U.S. citizens and permanent residents. Out-of-state graduate students receive a non-resident tuition waiver. You simply need to be interested in studying or conducting research on some aspect of Canada or Canada-U.S. relations including: the Arctic, Québec and other francophone regions of Canada, natural resource management, climate change, human rights, urban planning, fisheries, law, humanities, public health, Indigenous political mobilization, the Salish Sea, to mention a few. In almost every area of study there is a way to integrate Canada into your thinking and language study into your training!

Only graduate students may apply for a FLAS in French (second year and above); grads and undergrads may apply for a FLAS in Inuktitut, First Nations’ or other languages (applicants may apply for first year study in Indigenous languages). In the past we have funded Tsek’ene, Lushootseed, Nuu-chah-nulth, Dane-zaa, Musqueam Salish, Tlingit, Anishinaabemowin and Japanese! We may also be able to fund study in languages that have recently grown in importance, such as Tagalog and Haitian Creole. Note—If you apply for a language other than French, we strongly encourage you to apply for both the summer and the academic year as training is not always available in all quarters for languages not offered at the UW.

  • Academic Year Graduate: $18,000 tuition, $15,000 living stipend
  • Academic Year Undergraduate: $10,000 tuition, $5,000 living stipend
  • Summer Graduate/Undergraduate: $5,000 tuition*, $2,500 living stipend
