Christopher Tounsel, African Studies Program Director, recently spoke with Donalda Brantley about her study abroad experience last summer as part of the inaugural cohort of students on the JSIS\/UW-Bothell Leadership and Nation Building in Rwanda – Sports Development, Global Health, Ecotourism and Human Rights<\/a> program. Brantley also received ASP support<\/a> for her study abroad, including the Nelson Mandela and Graca Machel Fellowship Fund and the Ottenberg-Winans Fellowship.<\/p>\n

This interview has been edited for length and clarity.<\/em><\/p>\n

What motivated you to\u00a0participate\u00a0in a Study Abroad program?<\/b><\/span>\u00a0<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Growing up, traveling was not accessible to me because I come from a low-income household with one working father and a stay-at-home mom of six kids. There was no room, time, or money to travel. The furthest I had been away from my hometown of Spokane was on an educational trip to Washington, DC sponsored by my school\u2019s Black Student Union as a senior in high school.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

I knew traveling was something I always wanted to do\u2014it was just out of reach for me at the time. I\u00a0saw opportunities to study abroad and thought that people like me would never be able to go. These trips were not meant for me.\u00a0Eventually the stories and videos I saw of study abroad opportunities got to me. I searched through UW\u2019s study abroad website and I saw\u00a0an opportunity to study in Rwanda. My high school history teacher, Jamie Oleson, made me fall in love with history and taught me the stories of Rwanda. This opportunity stuck out to me: a chance to go to Africa and be in a place related to my interests and culture.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

How has studying abroad changed your perspective on the world?<\/b><\/span>\u00a0<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Growing up in a\u00a0low-income Native and Black family and being in a diverse\u00a0school district, I understood differences in culture. I came into this study abroad with the appreciation of other\u00a0people\u2019s\u00a0perspective and left with a desire to expand my own perspective and knowledge on culture.\u00a0Specifically,\u00a0the program\u00a0held a lot of significance for me in learning more in depth about their history and culture.\u00a0In a world perspective, since we were immersed into the African Leadership University, we got to experience so many cultures from Rwanda,\u00a0Ethiopia,\u00a0Cameroon, Nigeria\u00a0and so many more African\u00a0countries.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

The ill thoughts and feelings towards Africa as an entire continent\u00a0have created a\u00a0stereotype\u00a0around this beautiful place. The truth is that there is rich culture, rich minds and an incredibly rich\u00a0future\u00a0ahead\u00a0and you can see a lot of\u00a0these things played out\u00a0from Rwanda.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

The world has a lot to offer in both terms of knowledge, history and culture, which is something I knew of before studying\u00a0abroad\u00a0but my perspective on that has been expanded now that I\u2019ve been able to\u00a0actually experience\u00a0it.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

\u00a0<\/span>What was the most surprising thing you learned about yourself during your time in Rwanda?<\/b><\/span>\u00a0<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

The most surprising thing I learned about myself during my time in Rwanda is that when I am around the right crowd, I really am not as shy as I think I am. I was able to flourish, lead and create meaningful\u00a0connection\u00a0because the environment I was in was welcoming and felt like home even though I had never been there before.\u00a0I was able to properly handle the tasks at hand and when problems\u00a0arose,\u00a0I was able to work with my peers to create solutions.\u00a0When I was younger there was always that teacher or adult who told us that we are \u201cnatural born leaders\u201d and that \u201cwe have the ability to lead with power.\u201d\u00a0Of course,\u00a0I just thought this was a motivational quote people got\u00a0off\u00a0Pinterest,\u00a0but it is true! You truly do have the ability to lead what you put your mind to and studying in Rwanda was a pleasant reminder and\u00a0learning moment for myself.<\/span> \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

How did this experience shape your academic or career goals?<\/b><\/span>\u00a0<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

I am currently in my undergrad studying Education, Communities and Organizations. My academic and career goals are to give back to community in a meaningful way. Studying abroad in Rwanda, volunteering at different places, and being a part of their community temporarily helped deepen my desire to want to be a part of something amazing which serves to help others. In Rwanda they have rebuilt their society and country entirely through the work of community, forgiveness and building one another up. It is a beautiful image of resilience.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

What advice would you give to students who are considering studying abroad?<\/b><\/span>\u00a0<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

I encourage everyone to apply even if you are afraid of financial and social barriers. I live in this same\u00a0boat,\u00a0and you must set yourself up to be able to sail on the sea.\u00a0Do not be afraid of rejection. If at first you\u00a0don\u2019t\u00a0get in, apply again. Be aware of your surroundings and the impact that one can have within a group of people. Involve yourself in a meaningful way but allow others to have their place as well. Prioritize your health and wellbeing before you prioritize an experience. You are going to have an amazing time regardless of what you do or do not get to do.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

What courses or academic experiences abroad\u00a0had\u00a0the greatest impact on you?<\/b><\/span>\u00a0<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

During the beginning of each school year, African Leadership\u00a0University holds a welcoming ceremony called,\u00a0Ikaze.\u00a0Ikaze\u00a0translates to\u00a0\u201cWelcome\u201d in Kinyarwanda. It was an event that welcomed every student that was attending this\u00a0university,\u00a0including us from the US. Each country had their own walkout song and dance to\u00a0represent\u00a0themselves\u00a0and it was a beautiful thing to see. Some of our own University of Washington students walked with their Ethiopian peers and it was so amazing to see them reconnect with their roots.\u00a0Everyone got to feel a part of their home even if they were hundreds of miles away from it.\u00a0Another student and I decided to ask the DJ to change our song to Kendrick Lamar\u2019s \u201cThey Not Like Us.\u201d It was\u00a0a great choice\u00a0because everyone from the crowd joined us in our dance and it was\u00a0a great way\u00a0to end that\u00a0portion\u00a0of the ceremony.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

This ceremony left\u00a0a great impact\u00a0on me because I felt connected to\u00a0everyone,\u00a0and it was beautiful seeing everyone share the beauties of their cultural identities.\u00a0This was a prime example that music, food and culture\u00a0ties\u00a0people together internationally.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

How did the academic environment differ from what you\u00a0were used\u00a0to?<\/b><\/span>\u00a0<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

\u00a0<\/b>I had no expectations about what the learning environment would be like in Rwanda. To my surprise, once arriving at African Leadership University, it was similar to\u00a0the education environment that I have experienced in the US. Students are often paired with a\u00a0specific\u00a0interest which they focus their studies\u00a0on,\u00a0and they take courses accordingly. The main differences I saw were that\u00a0after\u00a0a student\u2019s first quarter, they often took all of their courses online and those visiting from outside of their home country\u00a0often\u00a0returned\u00a0home\u00a0and continued to study there. They called their majors, \u201cmissions.\u201d It was a slight change in wording which\u00a0makes\u00a0learning more encouraging and exciting.\u00a0Their work\u00a0seemed to be\u00a0more\u00a0hands on\u00a0than what I was used to seeing in the US. I appreciated this way of learning.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Was there a moment that challenged you, and how did you grow from it?<\/b><\/span>\u00a0<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

After a safari trip, I had gotten sick for a couple of days. When I get\u00a0sick,\u00a0I become a baby. The\u00a0whole world\u00a0turns upside down and\u00a0I only want to be in my bed. The issue was that I was thousands of miles away from my bed in a whole other country on a whole other continent. I wanted to be out and about doing\u00a0all of\u00a0the things and experiencing everything that I\u00a0could. I tried to go out and tough things out but eventually I told myself to take a break. I was supplied with plenty of care and water. I laid down and slept for\u00a0some time on the bus with people coming to check on me periodically. The following day I went with a friend experiencing swelling from a\u00a0tooth ache\u00a0to a pharmacy shop and we may have gotten lost, but we learned a lot from this experience. Being sick helped me to understand how certain pharmacies work, the effort to\u00a0getting\u00a0over sick and reassured me of the care that the people around me had for me. I may have\u00a0missed out on\u00a0a few\u00a0activities,\u00a0but I got back to full health and was blessed to be moving again fully immersed in the activities awaiting me.<\/span> \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Why did you choose\u00a0to\u00a0participate\u00a0in the Rwanda\u00a0program?<\/b><\/span>\u00a0<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

As an African and Native American, I have not experienced very many opportunities to explore the roots of my identity because they have been destroyed by colonization,\u00a0slavery,\u00a0and disease. Traveling to Africa was a dream of mine I knew I was going to\u00a0accomplish\u00a0at\u00a0some point in my life. I was glad to see this opportunity as\u00a0an option\u00a0because of my personal goals and personal history that I had learned. More specifically, I\u00a0was inspired by my\u00a0previous\u00a0learning of Rwanda by a teacher who had\u00a0a very big\u00a0impact on me\u00a0throughout high school.\u00a0Having\u00a0both\u00a0experiences and goals\u00a0along with the program\u2019s specific focuses on sports developments and human rights motivated me to choose to\u00a0participate\u00a0in the Rwanda program. I am glad I did because I had an amazing time.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

How did the Program support your learning and integration into the host culture?<\/b><\/span>\u00a0<\/b><\/span><\/b><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

\u00a0<\/span>The program\u00a0greatly supported\u00a0my learning and integration into the host\u00a0culture by continuously providing me with context, personal\u00a0stories\u00a0and new experiences to enjoy\u00a0everyday! It was my first time studying abroad and yet being out of the country. I was terrified and everything was new to me but there was never a second where I felt alone or unsupported. Special thanks to all the students from UW, African Leadership University, other support and the professors (Ron\u00a0Krabil\u00a0and Ben Gardener) who helped me every step of the way. I felt at home in a place away from home. On an entirely new continent I was able to feel comfort and\u00a0security\u00a0in the people and places I\u00a0resided\u00a0in.\u00a0it\u00a0was\u00a0a great time\u00a0and prepared me to be able to travel again in the future.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Would you recommend this\u00a0Program to others? Why or why not?<\/b><\/span>\u00a0<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

I may be\u00a0biased,\u00a0but I would 110% recommend this program to everyone regardless of their cultural or racial identity\u00a0because of\u00a0the learning opportunities. You will continue to learn about yourself and the world even outside of the program itself. When you return\u00a0home\u00a0you will begin to realize there is so much more learning to come.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
