PROGRAM ADMINISTRATION

Oversight and quality control are provided by the national Consortium for Advanced Study of Thai (CAST), based in the U.S. The AST program is managed on behalf of CAST by the University of Washington. The executive director of CAST is Dr. Thomas W. Gething. The AST program is overseen at Chiang Mai University by senior administrators in the Faculty of Humanities.

INSTRUCTIONAL STAFF

Eight to ten experienced instructors from the Faculty of Humanities of CMU make up the program teaching staff. All have extensive experience in foreign language teaching and many have been engaged in second language instruction throughout their careers. In addition most AST instructors have also taught Thai as a second language to students in the University of Wisconsin College Year in Thailand Program, the Trent University Program, St. Olaf's Asian Studies Program, or University of California System Education Abroad Program.

CHIANG MAI UNIVERSITY

Chiang Mai University, a leading regional university in Thailand, is located in Thailand's second largest city and serves as the northern region's academic center. CMU is seen as a important resource for governmental an non-governmental agencies and has extensive links with foreign institutions of higher education. Many significant development projects that have been launched in northern Thailand have been conducted by personnel from CMU. The University provides consulting services for official and NGO entities and assists in the conduct of feasibility studies and policy formulation.

CONSORTIUM of ADVANCED STUDY of THAI (CAST) MEMBERS

AST is sponsored by the Consortium for the Advanced Study of Thai. Member insitutions are:

Arizona State University, University of California-Berkeley, Cornell University, University of Hawaii at Manoa, University of Michigan, Northern Illinois University, Ohio University , University of California - Los Angeles, University of Washington, University Wisconsin-Madison, and Yale University.
