Admission Requirements

  1. A Master’s Degree awarded by an accredited institution 
  2. Statement of Purpose: detailing research questions and interests in at least one of the four foundational fields of the Ph.D. program and at least one of JSIS's area-based programs; and also identifying where possible how relevant JSIS faculty members and institutional resources would fit into a course of study
  3. Writing Sample: published or unpublished writing sample (generally not to exceed 10,000 words) demonstrating ability to write critically and analytically
  4. Curriculum Vitae
  5. A completed Ph.D. program supplemental application form
  6. Three (3) Letters of Recommendation
  7. All Undergraduate and Graduate Transcripts (unofficial, as digital uploads  - see below for details on official transcripts)
  8. Foreign Language: In most fields of study prior language study is an asset, and stronger applicants will normally have knowledge of relevant language sufficient for research
  9. All Test Scores: GRE General Test Scores and TOEFL (for international students) sent directly by the Educational Testing Service

Application Deadline

For enrollment starting autumn 2016, the deadline to submit applications is December 27th, 2015.

Applications are considered on an annual basis for admission in autumn quarter only.


How to Apply

1) Read the Jackson School Ph.D. Program application guidelines (available here) and the JSIS Ph.D. admissions FAQs (available here).

2) Create a profile and begin your application to the UW Graduate School online:

3) Complete and submit the following materials:

  • The Jackson School Supplemental Application form
  • A Statement of Purpose (generally 3-4 pages)
  • An academic writing sample (generally not to exceed 10,000 words)
  • A Curriculum Vitae
  • Digital versions of all unofficial transcripts (uploaded as PDFs)
  • 3 letter of recommendation nominations
  • A personal history statement (optional)
  • Official GRE test scores, submitted electronically via ETS

International applicants may also need to submit TOEFL or IELTS scores to prove their English language proficiency. For more information on English language requirements at the University of Washington, please see here.

Official copies of transcripts should not be sent to the Jackson School unless requested.

Applicants who accept an offer of admission will be asked to submit official, sealed copies of all transcripts to the University of Washington Graduate School from the institution that granted their master's degree prior to starting classes in autumn quarter.
