Please join the Jackson School Outreach Centers for a day of international themed sessions focused on the performing arts. Are you looking to find new ways to bring the world into your classroom? Are you looking to expand your resources for teaching international social studies and the arts? Highlights of the day will be a keynote session by dance educators and curriculum writers Debbie Gilbert and Joanne Petroff and participatory sessions with the internationally famous French African dance troupe Compagnie La Calebasse. Participants will receive 7 clock hours, an ethnic buffet lunch, lesson materials, classroom resources and door prize. Participants should expect to move and use their voices in these participatory sessions suitable for all.

“African Rhythms and Dance” by Compagnie La Calebasse
“Infusing Dance and Music in the Classroom: Smooth & Sharp, Legato & Stacato” by Whistlestop Dance Company
Compagnie La Calebasse is a French African dance troupe whose dancers hail from Cameroon, Ivory Coast, Burkina Faso, Guinea, and France. Described as exuberant, earthy, and joyful; their choreography is an exciting mix of African and Afro-contemporary styles. Compagnie La Calebasse will be in Seattle for performances with UW World Series. During La Calebasse's Mosaics session, participants will have a unique opportunity to learn African rhythms and dance with live drumming accompaniment. Company members will demonstrate, teach, and explain the roots, traditional meaning, and background behind each step and movement. This teaching is rooted in understanding the connection between the brain and the body, and each participant will enjoy a truly African experience.
Whistlestop Dance Company: Debbie Gilbert and Joanne Petroff are the Co-Founders and Co-Artistic Directors of the Whistlestop Dance Company. Since 1976, Whistlestop has earned a reputation for excellence in dance for audiences of all ages and abilities. Whistlestop received the Dance Educators Association of Washington's 1996 Honor Award for outstanding contribution to dance education in Washington public schools. Whistlestop has developed many programs infusing the arts with curriculum, such as Dancing Science, Dancing Math, Dancing Poetry, World Dance, Dancing Times and Cultures, and recently piloted the state’s Dance Classroom-Based Performance Assessments.
