Minoring in Latin American Studies

Declaring and Completing the LAS Minor

Any undergraduate admitted for study as a matriculated student in the College of Arts and Sciences may declare Latin American Studies as a minor.

Minor Requirements

30 credits from the categories & lists below. At least 20 of the 30 credits must be completed at the University of Washington (UW Foreign Study programs included). Minimum grade of 2.0 required in each course applied toward the minor.

  1. at least 5 credits chosen from HSTAA 185, 381 through 384;
  2. at least 5 credits chosen from CHSTU 101 (formerly 201), 200, 330, HSTAA 285, MUSIC 433, PORT 310, 335, SISLA/SPAN 485, 486, 489, SPAN 307, 320, 321, 322, 332, 339, 376, 439, 473 though 476, 483, 484;
  3. at least 5 credits chosen from ANTH 404, 418, CHSTU 255, 352, 354, GEOG 330, 430, POL S 405, SISLA 322, 342, 355, 451, 480 or their joint-listed equivalents, SPAN/WOMEN 468; and
  4. at least 15 additional credits chosen from the lists above OR from the following: ANTH 458, ARCHY 304, 476, CHSTU 180, 256, 405, 491, 498, GEOG 230, 371, 431, GEOG/SIS 335, HSTAA 283, 284, 482, 483, 485 through 488, HSTEU 361, 462, MUSIC 300, 317, 319, SIS 201, 401, 455, 480, SIS/ANTH/WOMEN 345, SISAF 444, SISLA 470 (max. 5 crs), 490, 492, SPAN 331, 461, 464, 465, 466, 478.

Language

One year of Spanish, Portuguese, or an Amerindian language, or equivalent proficiency.

Note: Port 105 must be take with 201 to fulfill the 1-year requirement. The language requirement is based on proficiency and is IN ADDITION to the 30 credits of core coursework, described above.
