The Jewish Studies Program is honored to announce that on Sunday, May 17, the first night of the Stroum Lectures 2009, the Program was named for long time benefactors Samuel (of blessed memory) & Althea Stroum during a special presentation and reception.

The JSP is pleased to introduce the 2009-2010 Hazel D. Cole Fellow:
Ms. Asya Vaisman
Ms. Vaisman is completing her PhD in the Yiddish program of the Near Eastern Languages and Civilizations department at Harvard University. Her dissertation topic is "Being Heard: The Yiddish Songs and Singing Practices of Contemporary Hasidic Women." Asya conducted original fieldwork for her dissertation in the Hasidic communities in New York, Jerusalem, London, and Antwerp. She has published articles in the periodicals Yiddish, Tsukunft, Sh’ma, and Forverts, and in the annual Russian-language anthology “Music of Yiddishkayt.” She will join the JSP faculty in fall 2009.
