MELL: Mapping and Enhancing Language Learning

Please help us contact schools and community language programs to complete the Mapping & Enhancing Language Learning Survey! We hope school counselors, the chair of the world languages department or school principals will help us find the answer to the question "What languages are taught in Washington schools?" by completing a brief online form about languages taught in your school or community program. We have already heard from about 221 of 488 public high schools and want to hear from the rest as well as elementary and middle schools.

Complete the survey at: http://internationaledwa.org/forms/mell.htm.

About the Project Mapping & Enhancing Language Learning (MELL) in Washington State:

Four National Resource Centers at the University of Washington's Jackson School of International Studies received funding in 2006 from the U.S. Department of Education to launch a four-year project entitled "Mapping and Enhancing Language Learning" (MELL) in Washington state. The online survey, produced through a collaborative effort of the UW Jackson School of International Studies, UW Language Learning Center, Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction, Washington State Coalition for International Education, and Washington Association For Language Teaching (WAFLT), represents a first step to help us get a better picture of what languages students are currently learning in our K-12 schools and community language programs. The World Languages State Profile data gathered from this survey will help legislators, business people, parents, and educators find out: What languages do we teach where?

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

1. How long will it take? We estimate about 3-5 minutes to complete the survey. Note: Provide the most accurate information you can; we don't expect you to spend time researching individual questions.

2. Who should fill it out? The online survey can be filled out directly by a contact person at the school, such as a school counselor or chair of the world languages department or the principal.

3. What is the timeframe? We are hoping to complete the gathering of data from high schools this spring. Please complete the survey by April 6, 2007, if possible. We also welcome surveys from elementary and middle schools and community-based programs.

4. How do I know if my school has already submitted a survey this year? For high schools, check: http://depts.washington.edu/mellwa We will update this list about twice a month. If your school is listed with a "2007" then we have already received a survey. If you have questions, email mellwa@u.washington.edu.

5. What will happen with the data?
Through the U.S. Department of Education grant, the MELL project has hired an assistant coordinator based at the UW Language Learning Center, who will coordinate the collection, analysis, and dissemination of data gathered from this survey (and other future surveys). To see data collected to date, visit: http://depts.washington.edu/mellwa (For data from the 2004 World Languages Survey, visit: http://internationaledwa.org/wlprofile/.)
