The UW Center for Human Rights (CHR) offers internship opportunities periodically; and internship positions are posted below. However, we are currently not accepting applications.



Internships are usually one academic quarter commitments with the possibility of extension. However, we are always seeking to have interns who are interested in longer-term internships. The internship program is designed to provide opportunities for those who are interested in human rights to perform meaningful work to help advance the goals of the Center.

Potential interns are expected to follow the guidelines below:

  • Commitment of at least 1 academic quarter with about 10 hours per week
  • Strong interest in human rights
  • Attention to detail and ability to work independently and perform duties with minimal oversight
  • Participate in program and events whenever possible
  • Possess intermediate to advance computer skills (MS Word, Excel, Publisher and Internet)
  • Provide general administrative assistance to staff
  • Enthusiastic and eager to learn
  • The ability to maintain confidentiality of private information accessed in performance of work duties



1. Newsletter and Annual Report Production
The Center’s quarterly newsletters and annual report is the primary means through which CHR disseminates substantive information about our programs and activities to its friends, donors, readers, students, etc. The interns will work closely with the Assistant Director to create the newsletters. The intern will:

  • Interview individuals (faculty, participants at CHR events, etc.)
  • Create first draft of stories
  • Gather/edit images
  • Work on layout and format of newsletters
  • Provide draft to Assistant Director for review
  • Make edits as requested and provide/disseminate final version

2. Communications
The Center for Human Rights website provides a brief overview of the programs, projects and activities housed at or (co-)sponsored by the Center. It also serves as a portal through which we can link to other Center-related sites including Facebook, Twitter, community events calendar, quarterly newsletter. The website also provides information about our student fellowship competition, past fellows and winners. Interns will work closely with Assistant Director to maintain the website and perform the following duties:

  • Be in charge of CHR’s email correspondence (checking email daily and forward as appropriate)
  • Add and remove events posting as requested on website
  • Update program and fellowship information on website
  • Maintain a current, up-to-date and professional website
  • Assist with maintenance of CHR bulletin board
  • Other duties as requested by staff

NOTE: Website maintenance does not require any technical web editing skills.

3. Social Media Campaign and Community Events Calendar 
Our primary goal is to disseminate CHR activities and information as well as other events relating to human rights. The intern will maintain an active presence by performing the following duties:

  • Announce sponsored and co-sponsored events and post about the events prior, during and afterwards (with comments and photos) as needed
  • Research and share events, information, news related to human rights; and,
  • Widen CHR’s reach by increasing numbers of likes, friends, and followers
