The Ghost of Freedom: A History of the Caucasus
Charles King

Thursday, May 21, 2009
7:00 - 9:00 pm
Walker-Ames Room, Kane Hall

Charles King will discuss his most recent book, The Ghost of Freedom: A History of the Caucasus, which was published by Oxford University Press in 2008. The book is a narrative and thematic history of the Caucasus mountains from the late eighteenth century through the early twenty-first. The book provides a comprehensive but accessible introduction to this fascinating part of the world and is based on extensive archival work, travel, and interviews. The major theme is the many-sided meaning of freedom in the Caucasus over the last two centuries: how states and nations have defined it, fought with one another over it, lived peacefully because of it, and in the process transformed the borderland between Europe and Asia.
