A History of the Series
The Ellison Center for Russian, East European and Central Asian Studies of the University of Washington's Jackson School of International Studies publishes this series of peer-reviewed occasional papers in the memory of Professor Donald W. Treadgold and as a tribute to his contribution in the field. The Studies serve as a forum for the rapid dissemination of current research on the regions indicated by the title. Publications include papers from symposia and monographs that may be too long for most journals, but too short to appear in book form. The first issue of the series, “Law in Russia,” was published in 1994, under the direction of Dan Waugh. Two years later, with the publication of the fourth issue, Sabrina P. Ramet took over as Editor, beginning a tradition of recruiting graduate students in the Russian, East European and Central Asian Studies (REECAS) program to serve as Managing Editors. During Professor Ramet’s tenure as editor, the Treadgold Papers (the original title of the series) covered a number of controversies associated with the ethnic conflict in the former Yugoslavia, topics related to the post-communist transition in Eastern Europe and Central Asia, and a diverse range of issues on both contemporary and historical Russia. In 2001, Glennys Young became the third Editor of the Treadgold series, continuing many of the earlier traditions as well as overseeing some of the greatest changes since the publication of the first issue. With an issue dedicated to renowned Russian scholar Reginald Zelnik, in 2005 the Treadgold Studies upgraded its production quality through a partnership with the University of Washington Press.
