Linguistic Analysis of Russian Old Believers in Alaska

Author: Tamara B. Morris,  PhD, formerly of the Institute of Russian Language RAS, Moscow

Abstract: This paper, to be given in Russian, gives a report on the analysis of basic features of Alaska Old Believer dialect on several language levels: phonetics, morphologics, systaxis and vocabulary, with the main emphasis on vocabulary.

The majority of the Alaskan Old Believers are from the ‘Harbintsy’ group who came from the Russian Far East and settled in the country near Harbin, the capital city of Manchuria, China during the 1930’s to 1960.

The report also includes a comparison of dialects among the Harbintsy of Alaska with the original, ‘mother dialects’ (materinskie dialecty) to suggest a linguistic analysis of the genesis of this group of Old Believers.

Note: This linguistic report is a companion paper to an ethnographic report on the expedition to the Alaskan Old Believers
