STUDY TOURS

The EARC offers a variety of study tours to East Asia through its major projects including the National Consortium for Teaching about Asia (NCTA), and the Washington-Hyogo Teacher Institute.

NCTA will be offering a study tour in summer 2009. Below you will find general information about each of these projects.

NATIONAL CONSORTIUM FOR TEACHING ABOUT ASIA ALUMNI STUDY TOURS
Study tour offered every summer to different destinations in East Asia.

Each year the EARC offers a study tour to East Asia for educators who completed the requirements of a National Consortium for Teaching about Asia (NCTA) 30-hour seminar in the Pacific Northwest. Designed to build on the knowledge gained in NCTA, the study tours provide participants with firsthand experience and increased knowledge of Asia. Destinations alternate between years. Previous NCTA study tours have traveled to China, Japan, and/or Korea.

NCTA IN CHINA 2009

A Study Tour for NCTA Alumni in the Pacific Northwest

This study tour is designed for K-12 educators who successfully completed the NCTA 30-hour seminar in Alaska, northern California, Idaho, Montana, Oregon, or Washington between 1999 and 2008. Educators will enjoy a one-week residential dorm experience in Beijing, followed by a ten-day tour of China’s heartland to see the Tang dynasty capital of Xi’an and the Northwest province of Gansu. Tentatively, dates are set for June 23 through July 11. This year’s study tour will follow a curriculum based on three themes: water and the environment, economic development, and identity. Leading the tour is Tese Neighbor, NCTA seminar leader, and Sasha Su-Ling Welland, veteran NCTA tour leader and Assistant Professor of Anthropology and Women’s Studies. A grant from the Freeman Foundation covers most expenses.

WASHINGTON-HYOGO TEACHER INSTITUTE
Plans underway for summer 2010.

Established in 1992 by the East Asia Resource Center and the Hyogo Business and Cultural Center, the Washington-Hyogo Teacher Institute is a multipart project that brings together American and Japanese teachers to promote mutual understanding and deepen their knowledge of each other’s country. In alternate summers, teachers from Washington State travel to Japan, visiting Washington’s sister prefecture of Hyogo as well as other regions. The teachers tour schools, experience a homestay with Japanese teachers, and visit sites of historic and cultural interest. A group of Hyogo teachers visits Washington and attends an Education Forum hosted by Seattle-area teachers.

The Washington-Hyogo Teacher Institute project also sponsors teacher workshops about Japan during the school year and periodic summer institutes about Japan. Generous funding from the Freeman Foundation helps make the Washington-Hyogo Teacher Institute possible.
