Workshop Information

This Autumn, the world will celebrate the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall and the resulting change in the landscape of Europe and the reordering of world powers. Attend this two-part professional development workshop and return to the classroom with
the knowledge, ideas, and strategies to teach Europe before 1989 and the European Union’s growth and development in the post-Cold War Era with contemporary implications. Participants may register for one or both days.

On August 19, Cornelius Partsch, Associate Professor of German at Western Washington University and member of the Goethe Institut Teacher Trainer Network, will headline a day focused on the separation and reunification of Germany.

On August 20, the focus will be on EU Enlargement to the East and current issues in the EU. This day will feature faculty experts as well as simulation of a Model EU designed for the high school classroom.

A limited number of travel grants are available to eligible teachers to help defray transportation and/or lodging costs for those who attend from outside the Seattle Metro area.

Participants of this workshop will be eligible to apply for curriculum development and EU Visit grants. For more information about these activities, see http://jsis.washington.edu/euc/educators/. These opportunities are made possible by generous grants from the US Department of Education and the European Union Delegation of the European Commission to the USA.

For more information, please contact the European Union Center of Excellence at euc@u.washington.edu or 206.543.1675.
