Wednesday, August 19, 2009 and Thursday, August 20, 2009
9:00 am - 4:30 pm
Husky Union Building (HUB), Room 310
University of Washington, Seattle Campus

This Autumn, the world will celebrate the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall and the resulting change in the landscape of Europe and the reordering of world powers. Attend this two-part professional development workshop and return to the classroom with
the knowledge, ideas, and strategies to teach Europe before 1989 and the European Union’s growth and development in the post-Cold War Era with contemporary implications. Participants may register for one or both days.
On August 19, Cornelius Partsch, Associate Professor of German at Western Washington University and member of the Goethe Institut Teacher Trainer Network, will headline a day focused on the separation and reunification of Germany.
On August 20, the focus will be on EU Enlargement to the East and current issues in the EU. This day will feature faculty experts as well as simulation of a Model EU designed for the high school classroom.
A limited number of travel grants are available to eligible teachers to help defray transportation and/or lodging costs for those who attend from outside the Seattle Metro area.
Participants of this workshop will be eligible to apply for curriculum development and EU Visit grants. For more information about these activities, see http://jsis.washington.edu/euc/educators/. These opportunities are made possible by generous grants from the US Department of Education and the European Union Delegation of the European Commission to the USA.

We strongly recommend that you utilize public transportation to get to the University of Washington. The Seattle Metro public transportation has an excellent trip planning website. The closest bus stops to the HUB are at (in order of proximity) the Husky Union Building (HUB), 15th Ave NE & NE Campus Parkway, and at NE 41st St & University Way NE.
We will provide round-trip bus passes for those using public transportation. Bus passes will be handed out at the end of the workshop.
Parking for the workshop will be available in the Padelford Garage.
To get to the Padelford Parking Garage from I-5, drive East on NE 45th St past the University of Washington and down the bridge towards University Village. At the bottom of the bridge, turn right towards Montlake Blvd NE / WA -513. Quickly turn right again at the first turn onto a small street (intersecting with 25th Ave NE just before it merges with Montlake Blvd NE). Continue going straight through the intersection onto Pend Oreille Road. Follow the road up to the gatehouse, and give the gatehouse attendant the workshop "password," which will be emailed to you prior to the event.

To get to the Padelford Parking Garage from WA-520, take the Montlake Blvd exit and merge onto Montlake Blvd / WA-513. Shortly after passing the Husky Stadium and Edmundson Pavilion, enter the left lane to drive onto 25th Ave NE. Turn left onto Pend Oreille Road. Follow the road up to the gatehouse, and give the gatehouse attendant the workshop "password," which will be emailed to you prior to the event.

From the Padelford parking garage, take the escalator / stairs up to the street and cross the street. Walk past the Communications Building and Thomson Hall on your right and a parking lot on your left, and walk to the left. The large building in front of you is the Husky Union Building.
These workshops are sponsored by the Center for West European Studies, the European Union Center of Excellence, the Ellison Center for Russian, East European and Central Asian Studies, and the Goethe Institut.
