FLAS Fellowships

Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) Fellowships are provided by the federal government and are offered by CWES to encourage UW graduate students to study or conduct research in modern European languages.

CWES offers graduate students Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) Fellowships language training, at the UW or abroad, in ten West European languages. Priority is given to applicants seeking support for the study of Scandinavian languages, German, or Italian. Awards are made to students in the Humanities, Social Sciences, and professional fields. A CWES FLAS fellowship for the academic year covers tuition and fees plus a stipend of $15,000. A summer FLAS covers tuition and fees, plus a $2500 stipend. Fellowships may also be awarded for overseas study.

Application deadline for the FLAS is usually January 15. Applications and guidelines are available in the Jackson School of International Studies Student Services Office, 111 Thomson Hall, on the UW campus.
