The University of Washington is the Pacific Northwest’s premier university for the study of Europe and maintains one of the most distinguished European Studies programs on the West Coast. The Center helps support the university’s diverse array of European Studies offerings at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. The Center organizes several study abroad programs and provides funding for foreign language learning through our FLAS grant program.
European Studies Degree The undergraduate degree program in European Studies is an interdisciplinary major covering the entire European continent. Students enrolled in the European Studies program can pursue the general degree or one of several specialist tracks. CWES works jointly with the Henry M. Jackson School of International studies to offer the European Studies degree, which is open to all University of Washington undergraduates. Certificate in Trans-Atlantic Studies (CTAS) This certificate is awarded to students who complete the core course of the Euromasters program at the University of Bath (UK) in the fall and then take courses on trans-Atlantic studies and American politics during winter quarter in Seattle. European Union Studies Certificate This certificate, available to undergraduate and graduate students, is awarded for a program involving study of the politics of the European Union and key issues affecting European integration. The certificate is issued by our sister program, the EU Center of Seattle. More information can be found on the latter’s website.
FLAS Fellowships Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) Fellowships are provided by the federal government and are offered by CWES to encourage UW graduate students to study or conduct research in modern European languages.
Comparative Federalism Studies Program (COMFED) The COMFED program promotes the comparative study of federal systems in the United States and the European Union. COMFED allows UW graduate students the opportunity to study issues related to comparative federalism at partner universities in Europe.
Linkoping Exchange Program An exchange program for Graduate and upper level Undergraduate students between the UW and Linkopings Universitet in Sweden. The exchange emphasizes comparative EU-US studing int he fields of public policy, governance, and civil society.
