About the Center
The mission of the Center for West European Studies is to enhance the quality of teaching and research on West European politics, society and culture at the University of Washington and throughout the Pacific Northwest. The Center’s programs are uniquely interdisciplinary, fostering collaboration between Europeanists from twenty different departments and professional schools on campus. Our principal audiences are university faculty, students, K-12 educators, and the general public. Housed at the Henry M. Jackson School of International Studies, which features one of the largest collections of area studies centers in the United States, CWES is part of a network of federally-funded National Resource Centers for West European Studies.
The Center for West European Studies was again selected in 2006 as a National Resource Center for a fifth three-year grant cycle (2006-2009). Our grant application narrative describes the university's resources for European studies and our plans for the current cycle.
