The following grants are administered by the Center or the Canadian government. Grants include funding for research and travel.
Foreign Language and Area Studies Fellowships (FLAS)
Foreign Language and Area Studies Fellowship applications for 2009-2010 are due in January 2010 (exact date is not yet available). For information on the Fellowship see the Jackson School Graduate Program web site and click on "Fellowships and Financial Support." Fulbright Grants to Canada – UW deadline 23 September 2009
Approximately 20 Fulbright Full Grants in all fields of study relevant to Canada or Canada-US relations will provide round-trip transportation, maintenance for one academic year, and health and accident insurance.

Center Travel Grants – ongoing
Graduate students enrolled in the Center’s Professional Development Program may apply for up to $200 annually to present a paper at an academic conference.

PNWCSC Travel Grants – ongoing
Once a student has utilized the Center’s annual travel grant, s/he may apply to the Pacific Northwest Canadian Studies Consortium (PNWCSC) for additional travel monies to present a paper at an academic conference.

Center Lecture Awards – ongoing
Graduate students enrolled in the Center’s Professional Development Program who provide a public lecture on Canada are eligible for $150 in compensation.

Center Representative Opportunities – ongoing
Affiliated graduate students who attend a Center-sponsored event as the Center Respresentative are eligible for $25 in compensation. Contact the Canadian Studies Center for more information.
International Canadian Summer Research Institute – deadline 1 December
The Canadian Consulate General, Seattle in collaboration with the Pacific Northwest Canadian Studies Consortium, offers an annual Faculty Summer Research Institute (July) that alternates between British Columbia and the Yukon, and Alberta. Fifty percent of the registration fee will be paid for by the Center for all successful applications from the UW.

Government of Canada Doctoral Student Research Award – deadline 31 October
The Doctoral Student Research Award promotes research that contributes to a better knowledge and understanding of Canada, its relationship with the United States, and its international affairs. The grant is designed to give doctoral students an opportunity to conduct part of their research in Canada. Applicants may request funding up to $10,000.

International Council for Canadian Studies, Graduate Student Scholarships – deadline November
The ICCS offers twelve scholarships per year (up to $3,500 for all expenses) to support the work of young scholars in the social sciences or humanities who are in the process of preparing a graduate thesis or doctoral dissertation on Canada.

International Council for Canadian Studies, Best Doctoral Thesis – deadline November
The International Council for Canadian Studies (ICCS) offers this award for an outstanding PhD thesis on a Canadian topic, written in any language, which has been successfully defended within the preceding two years. Applications must be submitted by the Association or Associate Member.

Government of Canada International Scholarships
Foreign Affairs and International Trade Canada (DFAIT) is responsible for the Government of Canada's participation in major International Scholarship Programs. DFAIT provides support to international scholars in Canada, which is often reciprocated by foreign governments which support Canadian scholars in their countries.

Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarships
Canada is building a world-class research capacity by attracting top-tier doctoral students, both nationally and internationally, who will positively contribute to our economic, social and research-based growth for a prosperous future. To promote this world-class excellence, the Government of Canada has launched the Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarships (Vanier CGS) program. This prestigious program awards 500 international and Canadian doctoral students with three-year scholarships. A Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarship is valued at $50,000 per year, for up to three years.
