Canadian Studies Grant Opportunities

The following grants are administered by the Center or the Canadian government. All grants are specific to Canadian Studies, the Canadian-US relationship and Canada’s role in the world. Grants include funding for course development, conference travel, speaking engagements, campus programming, etc.

Center Program Enhancement Grant Project Awards – due 31 May
Affiliated Faculty may apply for up to $2,000 in project grants (for course development, research, travel, etc.) as part of the Center’s Program Enhancement Grant application to Foreign Affairs, Canada.

Course Development Grants – due 31 December
The Center offers course development grants for up to $7,000 as part of our Title VI Grant. Revised or new courses must include at least one third Canadian content.

Center Lecture Awards
The Center will pay Affiliates $250 extra compensation for providing lectures on Canada or the Canada-US relationship to organizations in the region or nationally.

Center Affiliated Faculty may apply for up to $500 annually to present a paper at an academic conference.

Government of Canada Research Grant Program – due 30 September
Research grants are designed to assist individual scholars or a team of scholars in writing an article-length manuscript of publishable quality that contributes to a better knowledge and understanding of Canada, its relationship with the United States, and its international affairs. Applicants may request funding up to $20,000.

Government of Canada Faculty Enrichment Program – due 31 October
The Faculty Enrichment Program (Course Development) provides faculty members an opportunity to develop or update a course with substantial Canadian content that will be offered as part of their regular teaching load. Applicants may request funding up to $6,000 and an additional $5,000 for student mobility.

Government of Canada Conference Grant Program – due 30 June
This grant is intended for US four-year colleges and universities or research institutions that undertake a conference on a Canadian, Canada-US or North American issue. Applicants may request up to $20,000.

Government of Canada International Scholarships
Foreign Affairs and International Trade Canada (DFAIT) is responsible for the Government of Canada's participation in major International Scholarship Programs. DFAIT provides support to international scholars in Canada, which is often reciprocated by foreign governments which support Canadian scholars in their countries.

International Canadian Summer Research Institute – due 1 December
The Canadian Consulate General, Seattle in collaboration with the Pacific Northwest Canadian Studies Consortium, offers an annual Faculty Summer Research Institute (July) that alternates between British Columbia and the Yukon, and Alberta. Fifty percent of the registration fee will be paid for by the Center for all successful applications from the UW.

Québec Government Grants
The Québec Government has grants available for faculty to revise currently taught courses to include Québec content or to create new courses focused on Québec. There are also grants for bringing speakers from Québec, for library acquisitions and for other programming.

The mandate of the Canada-US Fulbright Program is to enhance mutual understanding between the people of Canada and the people of the United States by providing support to outstanding graduate students, faculty, professionals and independent researchers.
