Killam Orientation in Ottawa

This fall the Killam Fellows enjoyed a scholars' orientation in Ottawa where they participated in an academic conference and roundtable, attended the Killam Public Lecture, and interacted with university and government administrators. Thanks to a partnership agreement between the Center and Killam Foundation, up to four UW students annually are eligible for this prestigious award. This year's Killam Fellows are Rozanna Fang (French) who is studying at McGill this fall and Adam Tanga (Political Science) who is in residence at University of Ottawa.

The Jackson School of International Studies Outreach Centers' annual Summer Seminar focused on global water issues this year. The Canadian Studies Center session brought Emma Norman from the University of British Columbia to discuss transboundary issues between Canada and the United States - issues that are very pertinent to the Puget Sound region.

Summer Institute 2009

The 31st Annual K-12 STUDY CANADA Institute, Vancouver and Whistler, served 20 educators nationally including from Colorado, Florida, Minnesota, Nevada, Oregon, Illinois, Nebraska, Louisiana, Idado and Washington. The Institute is lead by Tina Storer (front row, second from left) and Don Alper (directly behind) and supported by the Pacific Northwest National Resource Center (UW and Western Washington University).

10 June 2009 - Fulbright Chair Farewell

The Canada-US Fulbright Visiting Research Chair for 2008-09, Michael Orsini, has just completed his residency with the UW. Michael (center) is with Anand Yang, Jackson School of International Studies, and Juan Geurra with the Graduate School. The Chair is sponsored by the Jackson School, Graduate School, Global Affairs, and Social Sciences.


 

 

9 June 2009 - Annual Student Awards Reception

This year over 30 UW graduate and undergraduate students received awards or recognitions for their cross-border research. The students were recognized at the Annual Awards Reception co-hosted by the Consulate General of Canada Seattle.


 

 

8 June 2009 - UW Libraries Undergraduate Research Award

Anand Yang, Director of the Jackson School of International Studies and Nadine Fabbi with Jackson School students including the Task Force on Arctic Sovereignty "team." The Task Force, that went to Ottawa for one week in January, won Honorable Mention in the UW Libraries Research Award competition.


 

 

31 May - 5 June 2009 - Canadian Leadership Program Participant

This year Ann Huang, MBA student and the chair of the 2010 Canada Study Tour, was selected as one of 25 MBA students from across the US to participant in the Canadian Leadership Orientation Program sponsored by the Telfer School of Management, University of Ottawa. Ann is with Dan Abele, Head of Research and Academic Relations for the Canadian Embassy's Public Affairs Division, Washington,DC.

 

Ann and Dean Micheál Kelly of the Telfer School of Management. Ann will bring much of her Ottawa experience to bear on the 2010 Canada Study Tour.

22 May 2009 - Certificate of Merit Awarded to Center Associate Director

This year Nadine Fabbi was awarded a Certificate of Merit by the International Council for Canadian Studies in Québec City. The award honors individuals who have made significant contributions to Canadian Studies. 11 May 2009 - Jackson School Centennial Gala

The 100th Anniversary Gala for the Henry M. Jackson School brought together over 50 Canadianists to celebrate the Center's role in the Jackson School. 11 May 2009 - The Good and Bad of a Universal Health Care System: What America Can Learn from Canada

Dr. Mary Ellen Purkis (left) provided a lecture to students and faculty at the University of Washington, Tacoma. Purkis was invited by Dr. Janice Laakso, Affiliated Faculty of the Center and professor in the Social Work program.

 

9 May 2009 - The Ninth Annual Documentary Film Workshop: Coming of Age in a Changing World

Educators from throughout the Pacific Northwest convened on Saturday, May 9, to learn about implementing documentary film into their classroom. The keynote was Diana Hess, Professor of Curriculum and Instruction, School of Education, University of Wisconsin-Madison, who specializes in the use of controversy in the classroom.

Educators also met with regional and film experts and saw clips from a number of films, including A Century of Genocide in the Americas: The Residential School Experience, the Canadian Studies Center-sponsored session, featuring UW alum Rosemary Gibbons, who spoke about the history of residential schools in Canada and the effects the schools had on First Nations communities. 

 

1 May 2009 - Canada Study Tour Reception

The president of the Canada-America Society, Michael Herbst (far left) sponsored a reception to celebrate the 3rd Annual Canada Study Tour for UW MBA students. The Canada Study Tour is organized by MBA students and engages in four days of visits with Vancouver companies every February.

 

17 April 2009 - Graduate Student Symposium

Morna McEachern was this year's chair for the annual graduate student symposium. Morna also presented her research on "Teen Pregnancy and Political Symbols in UW and Canadian Sexual Health Education Guidelines."

3 April 2009 - Native American Students in Advanced Academic Conference

The 8th Annual Symposium of Native American graduate students was held at the UW featuring the work of 10 graduate students. The Karen Capuder (right) served as one of six student presidents as well as as Emcee for the day. Augustine McCaffery, Graduate School (left), served as advisor. A reception followed celebrating Charlotte Coté, American Indian Studies (center) recent promotion to Associate Professor. The Center was a proud sponsor of the symposium.

 

23 March 2009 - Greenland Homerule Representatives Visit the Center

As part of the Center’s Circumpolar North Initiative, meetings were held at UW with representatives from Greenland. 19 March 2009 - Title VI 50th Anniversary Conference in Washington, DC

From left, Nadine Fabbi, Associate Director, Canadian Studies, Mark Oberle, Associate Dean of Public Health at UW, Dan Hart, Center Chair, and Violet Ford, Vice President of the Inuit Circumpolar Council, Ottawa provided a panel at the 50th Anniversary Title VI Conference in Washington, DC. The panel was entitled, "New Directions in International Studies, the World from a Circumpolar Perspective."

 

16-17 March 2009 - UArctic Representatives Visit UW

In mid-March, representatives from the the undergraduate office for University of the Arctic visited the Center to assist in the circumpolar initiative. 13 March 2009 - Arctic Sovereignty Task Force Evaluation

Rob Heubert, Military and Strategic Studies and Political Science, University of Calgary, was the expert evaluator for the Arctic Sovereignty Task Force. He posed with Andrew Schwartz, Task Force member.

 

April Nishimura and Ruben Shimonov are clearly overjoyed having made it through the final evaluation for the Task Force!

10 March 2009 - Minnesota Humanities Center Canadian Studies Workshop

On March 9-10 the Center, in conjunction with the Minnesota Humanities Center and the Consulate General of Minneapolis offered a workshop entitled, "Building Knowledge and Understanding about Canada and Canada-US Relations." Twenty Minnesota educators benefited from the workshop.

In February Michael Treleaven (left) and Nadine Fabbi served as external evaluators for the University of Northern British Columbia, College of Arts, Social and Health Sciences where a Canadian Studies program is being considered. 20 February 2009 - Arctic Sovereignty Lecture Series

Students arrive in Ottawa

Mikhail Alexseev, Political Science, San Diego State University, spoke on "Russia's Northward Perspective: The Arctic Promise vs. the Siberian Curse" as part of the Center's lecture series on Arctic sovereignty.

12-16 February 2009 - 2009 Canada Study Tour

This year 21 MBA students participated in the 3rd Annual MBA Study Tour to Canada representing both the day and evening programs and including a student representative from Industrial Engineering.

 

MBA students, Kelly Voss and Meharpratap Singh served as co-leaders for the 2009 MBA Study Tour to Vancouver, British Columbia. The Tour included visits with the US Consul General and Trade Commissioner in Vancouver, many business leaders, and colleagues from the Sauder School of Business (UBC) and the Segal School of Business (Simon Fraser).

4th Annual Health Symposium

The 4th Annual Public Health Symposium: US-Canada Academic Collaboration in the Pacific Northwest, brought together 75 faculty and graduate students from UW, University of British Columbia and Simon Fraser University.

19 January 2009 - Task Force Students at the USCG Healy

Arctic Sovereignty Task Force at the US Coast Guard Healy

Students in the 2009 International Studies Program Task Force on Arctic Sovereignty, visit the US Coast Guard Healy. The Healy did three cruises in the Arctic this last summer. Two of the cruises brought together US and Canadian scientists who worked collaboratively to measure the continental shelf off of the Arctic coast.
