Summer and Fall 2005 Course List

For African Studies Minor

The below list contains courses offered at the Seattle campus of the University of Washington that can count towards the African Studies minor.  This minor is offered through the African Studies Program that is housed in the Jackson School of International Studies.  The African Studies Program coordinates and disseminates information about Africa-related events on campus; facilitates research, internships, and study abroad opportunities in Africa; and administers the undergraduate minor (see program website at http://depts.washington.edu/africa1/).  The African Studies minor encourages students to undertake an inter-disciplinary study of Africa and the African Diaspora through coursework in a variety of scholarly disciplines and programs, including American Ethnic Studies, Anthropology, Art History, Ethnomusicology, Forestry, Fisheries, Geography, History, International Health, and International Studies

To complete an African Studies minor, a student must take at least 30 credits of Africa-related courses.  Those courses must be spread across three or more disciplines/programs and 20 of the 30 credits must be at the 400-level or above.  All of the courses on the below list will count towards the minor either automatically or by consultation with the African Studies advisor.  For courses requiring consultation, please inform the African Studies advisor of your decision to take the course, and he will communicate to your regular advisor that the course is qualified to count towards the minor.  If you would like to become an African Studies minor or have any questions about the minor, please contact the African Studies Program advisor Adam Taylor at 616-0998 or africa1@u.washington.edu .  NOTE: the African Studies Program office is closed for the summer.
